“Attention: Art! Conservation and presentation — a contradiction in terms?”
Vote of confidence for Cologne: For the first time, the German Art Restorers' Association will stage its annual event at EXPONATEC COLOGNE
The German Art Restorers' Association (VDR) has demonstrated its confidence in EXPONATEC COLOGNE (17th to 20th November 2009) by choosing the International Trade Fair for Museums, Conservation and Heritage as the venue for its annual event. "The range of products and services offered at the trade fair reflects a broad spectrum of our activities. Therefore, we are delighted to have found EXPONATEC COLOGNE — the ideal location for our Restorers’ Conference," says Prof. Volker Schaible, President of the VDR. EXPONATEC COLOGNE has also received additional support from the sector itself: as early as six months before the event, renowned exhibitors such as Deffner & Johann GmbH, Kremer Pigmente GmbH & Co.KG and Long Life for Art / Christoph Waller have already registered.
“Attention: Art! Conservation and presentation — a contradiction in terms?” This is the title of the public event that the VDR is staging on Friday, 20th November 2009, at EXPONATEC COLOGNE. Art and cultural assets are subject to scientific research and serve as an educational medium. Through the rising number of presentations at permanent collections and changing exhibitions, increasing numbers of people are being given the opportunity to follow up their cultural interests. At the same time, society is responsible for ensuring that art and cultural assets are preserved. This tug-of-war between preservation and presentation makes restorers simultaneously the advocates of the objects and the vicarious agents of the "culture business". The conference on 20th November 2009 aims to illustrate these contrasting roles. The focus will be on issues such as: What are the risks and dangers? To what extent can restorers exert their influence? The broad spectrum of topics ranges from the limiting conditions for the preservation of collectors' items to key individual aspects of preventive conservation, e.g. museum construction, archiving and storage, exhibition technology, transportation of cultural assets and risk management. These are topics for which the exhibitors of EXPONATEC COLOGNE will present the latest developments and solutions.
