Symposium on Capabilities, Freedoms and Policy Making in the Pacific Region
Location: University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia
Dates: November 17th and 18th 2009
“The capability approach provides the intellectual foundation for human development. This approach considers human well-being, participation and freedom to be central economic and social objectives” - Amartya Sen
The Symposium will bring together academics, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss how, and the extent to which, the ‘capability approach’ and the human development paradigm can engage governmental and non-governmental institutions in their policy decision-making processes. The Symposium sets the stage for a cross-disciplinary dialogue among academics, policymakers and practitioners in the Pacific region from a variety of fields, including development, design and architecture, anthropology, sociology, law, political economy. It will explore the character of the capability approach, as a development strategy that privileges important aspects of the human condition. Presenters will examine the role and application of the capability approach within national and international policy contexts, prompting discussion of the role and relevance of human freedoms, well-being, and rights in the pursuit of ‘human development’.
The Symposium encourages the following topics or thematic combinations:
Capabilities and Development Theory
Capabilities and Development Practice in the Pacific Region
Development, Freedoms and Human Rights
Development and Indigenous Well-being
Development, Capabilities and Design
Development Process and Participatory Capabilities
Development and Capabilities Measurement

The Symposium brings together researchers and practitioners, from the Pacific Region, who specialize in a range of disciplines, including economics, philosophy, political theory, anthropology, sociology, and development studies.
