Special Issue on “Critical Management Studies: Challenges of Inclusivity”
Critical Management Studies (CMS) has emerged as an exciting area of enquiry
in Management in the last few years. CMS is characterized by interdisciplinary
research
that borrows from a variety of critical traditions in social sciences. Extant research in
CMS is eclectic and embraces divergent traditions of critical enquiry that include
Marxist, Poststructuralist, Postcolonial, and Feminist traditions to mention a few. These
divergent perspectives have been employed to question narrow managerialism founded
on practices of large businesses. CMS expands the academic boundaries of the discipline
by focusing on issues of justice, equality, social transformation, and emancipation from a
wider societal perspective.
In this particular special issue of Decision, we wish to specifically address the
problem of inclusivity. We view inclusivity as exercise of ‘voice’ by divergent interest
groups in managerial processes. Our primary objective with the special issue is to
develop an understanding of processes that are either enabling or inhibiting ‘voice’ of
workers, skilled professionals, artisan groups, consumers, communities, and small
businesses among others. We are not merely looking for accounts of antagonism between
these groups and large businesses, but are more interested in exploring the possibilities of
designing cooperative, fair, and just alternatives. In this process, we encourage
contributors to explore concrete managerial practices and institutional arrangements. A
wide variety of topics will be suitable for this special issue and may include (but not
limited to) the following:
· Changing conditions of workers and processes of work
· Processes of workers’ participation in organizations
· Alienation among white collared workers
· Workers’ cooperatives and unions as countervailing institutions
· Workers as skillholders;
artisan and craft workers
· Consumption among subaltern consumers
· Anticonsumption
and resistance among consumers
· Environmental degradation, civil society activism and business
· Business, public sphere and inclusivity
· Role of state and private corporations in creating inclusivity
· Information Technology and empowerment of subaltern groups
· Financial inclusivity of communities and small business groups
Papers of around 10,000 to 12,000 words are invited for the special issue. The deadline
for the submission of papers is 15th December, 2009. We plan to publish the Special
Issue in 2010.
All papers will be subjected to a doubleblind
peer review. Full guidelines for prospective
contributors are available at: http://www.iimcal.ac.in/research/instructions.asp
