CALL FOR PAPERS
Arrangements are on to publish a book titled READINGS ON ISSUES AND CHALLENGES OF NIGERIAN SOCIETIES to be edited by Professor ‘Jide Osuntokun, Dr. Victor Ukaogo and Dr. Akachi Odoemene. This would be a worthy compilation capturing the varying depths of Nigeria’s peoples and cultures, and would essentially be for students of tertiary institutions and other concerned readers.
This call is for interested scholars to contribute chapters in the book, interrogating their subjects from fresh and original perspectives, on the following broad themes:
•Peoples and Groups of the ‘Niger Area’: History of the ‘Founding of Nigeria’
•The Traditions of Origin of Nigerian Cultural Groups
•Village Social Structure and Social Organisation (the family, kinship, marriage, secrete cults, social security networks, etc)
•Economic Systems in Nigerian Cultures (including Food Processing)
•Ecology and Community-based Indigenous Natural Resource Management
•Indigenous Religions: Practices and Traditions (including Witchcraft)
•Traditional Oral Literature, Music and Dance (Performing Arts) in Societies
•Language and Cultural Evolution (including Nigerian Pidgin)
•Festivals and Communal Rituals in Nigerian Cultures (including Rites of Passages)
•Indigenous Crafts and Trades in Nigerian Cultures
•Habitat, Habit and Health: Society, Agency and Livelihood in Nigerian Cultures
•Ancient Art Cultures of Nigeria: Benin, Ife, Igbo-Ukwu, Nok, etc.
•Gender and Class Power Relations in Nigerian Cultures
•Traditions of Politics and Leadership in Nigerian Cultures
•Inter-ethnic Group Relations (pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial)
•Groups’ Contact with Europe: Pre-Slave Trade, Slave Trade and “Legitimate Trade” Eras (and impact on society)
•Colonialism and Resistance of Nigerian Groups
•Nationalism and Nation-building
•Nigeria’s Four Republics: A Critical Discourse
•The Nigerian Civil War: Histories and the Aftermath
•Military Rules in Nigeria
•Perspectives on African Philosophy
•Modernism, Urbanism and City Life in Nigeria
•Environmental Issues in Nigerian Societies: Resources, Conflict and Change
•Contemporary Issues: Globalization, Anthropology of AIDS Epidemic, Cultural Imperialism, MDGs and other issues
Interested contributors are encouraged to send their abstracts of about 300 words with a short biographical note (100 words), contact address, and three to five keywords related to the area of research to the Editor at the e-mail addresses listed below. The maximum limit of each essay is 20 A4 pages (double line spacing) in Microsoft Word format, with the referencing conforming with the Chicago Manual Style (15th Edition). The file name should bear the last name of the author. There is need for precision and simplicity in language. This is important to enable easy comprehension by an average student. The number of paper abstracts to be submitted by any one author is restricted to only one.
DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT IS 30th SEPTEMBER, 2009. The Editor who would acknowledge receipt of all such abstracts within one day. Authors of accepted paper abstracts would be notified by 15th October 2009. DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF FULL PAPERS IS 30th NOVEMBER, 2009. All papers would be rigourously peer-reviewed, and necessary suggestions, changes and modifications adequately effected by authors before final publication is undertaken.
