This session incorporates diverse views of the many roles of cultural resource management in the southeastern U.S. and highlights the contributions of contract and compliance projects to significant research topics in the region. The parameters of research for contract archaeology and historic documentation vary considerably from academic pursuits, and the value of data collected during contract projects is often undervalued and underutilized. Yet, contract and compliance projects are now responsible for having identified and investigated an overwhelming number of archaeological sites and historic properties throughout the U.S. and in western Europe.
Papers for this broadly defined session may address specific case studies, thematic research topics in southeastern history, challenges to modern contract undertakings, complexities in balancing legislative compliance and client demands with responsible research agendas, or ethical considerations and ramifications involved in contract ventures. Papers from both the public and private spheres are welcome, and papers addressing the 2010 conference’s “Coastal Connections” theme are especially encouraged.
