This book project seeks papers that analyze modern African currencies from diverse perspectives, most especially history, economics, sociology and culture. These can be from country studies or from comparative perspectives.
Sub-themes:
1. Life history and career
2. Currencies, corruption and cultural obligations (funerals, birthdays, parties etc)
3. Currencies and rituals
4. Currency handling (from stringing cowries to wallets and money clips)
5. Underground economies and African currencies.
6. Minting and security of currencies
7. Currencies and Labor mobility (Case Studies)
8. Strong and weak currencies; strong and weak economies
9. The problems of fixed and flexible exchange rates
10. Economic liberalization and African currencies
11. African currencies, the International Invoice Currencies and export pricing
12. National and regional currencies
13. Currencies and modern barter (i.e. diamonds for guns, cocoa for guns, specter of “blood diamonds”)
14. The personalization of the currency in Africa
15. Currency counterfeiting
16. Theoretical Perspectives
