Call for Papers
2nd Annual Conference of the Atlantic Medieval Association
August 29 and 30, 2009
St. Francis Xavier University
Antigonish, Nova Scotia
The newly conceived Atlantic Medieval Association is dedicated to fostering scholarly conversations and connections amongst medievalists living and working in the North Atlantic region including Atlantic Canada, New England, the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Iceland. To foster such connections the Atlantic Medieval Association holds a conference every year inviting scholars of the region to share their research. This year’s conference will be held on August 29-30th, 2009 at St. Francis Xavier University in beautiful Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Paper proposals of approximately 300 words are invited in any discipline and any topic in the area of medieval studies. While the Association encourages interested scholars to submit paper proposals based on a wide variety of topics, two themes will be explored in depth at this year’s conference.
• The North Atlantic Middle Ages. Possible topics include but are not limited to premodern exploration in the North Atlantic region, Atlantic trade and travel in the Middle Ages, Viking sagas of expansion, and Irish immrama. Proposals on Atlantic Africa are particularly welcome.
• Marx and the Middle Ages. Possible topics include but are not limited to Marxist analyses of medieval economic systems, class structures of medieval towns and villages, and fetish and commodity in the medieval Church.
Please submit 300 word abstracts by July 15 to Cory James Rushton, Assistant Professor of English, St. Francis Xavier University, crushton@stfx.ca or Donna Trembinski, Assistant Professor of History, St. Francis Xavier University, dtrembin@stfx.ca.
