African and Diasporic Women Call for Papers

Given trends, Black Women, Gender & Families (BWGF), an interdisciplinary journal, is seeking submissions for a special issue on women of Africa and the African Diaspora. African and African Diaspora women are not only linked by heritage but also by the global nature of African women’s issues. We expect that contributions to this special will, in many ways, be applicable to women in all communities of color that share similar experiences.
Submissions should focus on the centrality of African and African Diaspora women as a unit of analysis. Encouraged are critical discussions on the trans/national movements, locations and intersections within the African Diaspora. We are interested in papers that not only explore problems experienced by women of the African Diaspora, but also their responses whether it is in terms of activism or artistic expression. Some of the suggested (but not limited to) themes include:
• HIV & AIDS
• Sexual exploitation
• Violence
• Immigration
• Parenting and care of kin
• Employment
• Education
• Welfare
• Human trafficking
• Political power and/or activism
• Literature
• Performance
This list is not exhaustive of the issues and circumstances of women of Africa and the African Diaspora, other topics will also be considered. BWGF welcomes abstracts and manuscripts from scholars whose research addresses these and similar areas of examination and analysis. Interested authors should submit an abstract of 500 words or less which reflects a clear understanding of the relationship between the proposed content and the focus of this special issue and highlight the manuscript’s focus and its historical, cultural, theoretical, or methodological approaches by June 30, 2009. A draft of the completed manuscript is due August 17, 2009. Submissions should not exceed 30 pages, including notes, tables, and references. Abstracts and manuscripts should be written in the Chicago Style, 15th edition. Previously published work or that currently under consideration elsewhere will not be considered.
