Remixing the Art of Social Change: a Hip-Hop Approach teach-in
|
THREE DAYS OF HIP-HOP. OVER 50 PRESENTATIONS AND WORKSHOPS. FILM. ART. ACTION.
The Remixing the Art of Social Change: a Hip-Hop Approach teach-in is designed to outline the tools and resources necessary to develop curriculum, programs, and work (artistic and scholarly) based on hip-hop culture. The teach-in will also address how to retain and attract high caliber hip-hop artists and build sustainable organizations. Our field is made up of organizations that use hip-hop culture to promote social change and push the envelope of what hip-hop culture can produce artistically, academically, politically and socially.
From June 12-14, 2009 in our nation’s capital, Words Beats & Life, Inc. will host the most unique three-day convening of the greatest thinkers and doers of our generation. For anyone working with, studying, researching, or interested in the field of hip-hop culture, the teach-in is your opportunity to participate in the silent element of hip-hop: Knowledge.
Attendees can come see hip-hop pioneer, Afrika Bambaataa; hip-hop scholar, Joseph G. Schloss, Ph.D.; the DC premier of the documentary, New Muslim Cool; a panel discussion with representatives from RECOGNIZE! Hip-Hop and Contemporary Portraiture (Smithsonian Institution), The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Phillips Collection, and other institutions embracing hip-hop; hip-hop visual artist, Aniekan Udofia’s first solo exhibition at Dissident Display gallery; workshops and presentations adapted for hip-hop based organizations; open skill share spaces in Urban Dance, Photography, Beat-building, and DJ’ing, among others. Also, Roger Gastman, Editor-in-Chief of SWINDLE magazine, will moderate a panel about graffiti and public art. We’ll also be honoring Afrika Bambaataa with a Remix Award, among others...and so much more!
