CFP: Questioning 'Credible Commitment': Re-thinking the Glorious Revolution and the Rise of Financial Capitalism

In 1989, North and Weingast argued that the establishment of parliamentary supremacy over public finance created an environment in which investors could rely upon the state to meet its financial promises. This conference will draw together revisionist scholarship on the 'credible commitment' thesis and construct a new consensus on how trust in financial markets and institutions developed and why it endured. We would welcome papers from established scholars and especially new researchers. Postgraduate bursaries will be available. Proposals of no more than 500 words should be submitted to credcom.2010@googlemail.com and the deadline for submissions is 15 October 2009. The conference will be held at Newnham College from 20-23 March 2010.
