Beyond Girls in Uniform and Death in Venice?
41st Anniversary Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
April 7-11, 2010

Through the lens of canonicity, the panel will take stock of the study of queer German literature as it has developed over the course of the last twenty years or so. The 1990 publication of James Jones’s study “We of the Third Sex” stands as a milestone in the study of queer German literature from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The twenty ensuing years have also witnessed the growth of publishing houses such as Daphne and Männerschwarm and the consequent increased accessibility to queer texts for a wider readership. This panel will explore the relationship between these developments and the question of a canon of queer German texts. Can we in fact speak of such a canon? Why have a few works attracted considerable popular and scholarly attention, while others have been forgotten, neglected, or obscured? Papers are encouraged that explore one or more of the following topics: 1) the fate of lesser known queer texts in German; 2) the privileging of particular texts; or 3) the concept of and historical and institutional conditions for canonicity in queer German culture.

The 41st Annual Convention will feature approximately 350 sessions, as well as dynamic speakers and cultural events. Details and the complete Call for Papers for the 2010 Convention will be posted in June: www.nemla.org. v
Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA session; however panelists can only present one paper (panel or seminar). Convention participants may present a paper at a panel and also present at a creative session or participate in a roundtable.
Travel to Canada now requires a passport for U.S. citizens. Please apply early for a passport if necessary.
