This one day academic event sits alongside the concurrent exhibition ‘The New Monumentality: Gerard Byrne, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Dorit Margreiter’, which explores the attraction of modern post-war buildings for three artists born in the heyday of monumental architecture.
Focus for this conference is on new university architecture - the local and the national, looking at: how particular universities and colleges acquired bold, modernist schemes, how they were intended to function, what aesthetic and educational concerns underpinned them and what broader cultural meanings they held then and continue to hold today. Speakers will include: Stefan Muthesias (University of East Anglia), Elain Harwood (English Heritage), Peter Cunningham (Cambridge University) and a tour of Leeds University campus with Ken Powell.
This conference is free of charge but places are limited. To book or for more information please contact Kirstie Gregory - kirstie@henry-moore.ac.uk
2-6pm, Friday 31st July, Henry Moore Institute.
