HJC SPECIAL FORUM ON AMERICAN INDIANS AND THE MEDIA: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Howard Journal of Communications invites manuscripts for a special section addressing American Indians and the Media. American Indian cultures have been a part of the American Mass Media since the first newspaper, Publick Occurrences, Both Forreign and Domestick, was printed in Boston in 1690. In 1828 in New Echota, Georgia, The Cherokee Phoenix debuted as the first newspaper published by an Indian nation. Bilingual in Cherokee and English, this paper sought to inform its own native audience as well as wield intellectual influence beyond its national borders. This duality of identity, evocative of the experiences of other subaltern and marginalized communities, has influenced American Indian cultural expressions, including the media. About 1.7 million American Indians and Alaska Natives are part of the U.S. populations, and there are 562 federally recognized nation/tribes. Today’s U.S. media universe has expanded over the centuries to include new media forms, challenging economies, and audiences no longer captive to geographic locales. This special forum will consider the past and evolving role of Americans Indians and the media, from representational paradigms to notable events; from historic events and institutions to the communication issues affecting the lives of contemporary American Indians.
Submissions are encouraged from a broad range of methodological approaches including, but not limited to, ethnographies, cultural studies, critical approaches, histories, and quantitative approaches. Guest co-editors of the special section will be Dr. Meta G. Carstarphen of the University of Oklahoma and Prof. John Sanchez of Penn State University. The special section will include three to four manuscripts selected through peer review process with an anticipated August 2010 publication date. Direct inquiries to Prof. Carstarphen at mcarstarphen@ou.edu
Manuscripts should conform to APA style and other requirements stated on the journal website (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/tf/10646175.html). Send four (4) copies of your manuscript to Dr. Carolyn Stroman, HJC Editor, Department of Communication and Culture, John H. Johnson School of Communications, 525 Bryant St., NW, Howard University, Washington, DC, 20059 by June 15, 2009. American Indian researchers are especially encouraged to submit their manuscripts.
