On October 17, 2009, Springfield Technical Community College will host a symposium in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry. Our keynote speaker will be David S. Reynolds, author of John Brown, Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights.
Paper topics on any aspect of John Brown are welcome. Final papers should be no longer than ten typed, double-spaced pages, and must be readable in 20 minutes. From 1847-1851, John Brown lived in Springfield. His intent was to establish a method of distribution that would offer a fairer market for wool. Although the company failed, Brown’s year in Springfield were crucial to his deepening involvement in the abolitionist movement.
