Call for papers for a M/MLA Special Session to be held November 12-15, 2009, in Saint-Louis, Missouri: "Constructing the Local in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Spain."
In the on-going debates concerning the 'national realities' and 'historical nationalities' within the Spanish federated state, local customs, histories, beliefs, artifacts, products, and even 'soil' are often invested with an aura of a primary authenticity in need to be defended from being dissolved into larger entities. The proposed session seeks to depart from this treatment of the local, interpreting the discourses and representations of the local as dynamic responses to policies and social practices of Spain's nation-formation and international integration. Papers examining the national and transnational constructions of the local in any texts, images, or social practices are invited. Please send 250-word abstracts to Eugenia Afinoguenova, Marquette U, afinoguenova@marquette.edu, by April 20, 2009.
