SHARP News Book Review Editor
Job description
SHARP News has three book review editors who handle reviews for books about history of the book. Each is delegated to cover a specific geographic area of the world, according to the subject area of the book, not the publisher’s location:
a) The Americas [usually North America];
b) European [UK, Ireland, and mainland Europe including Russia];
c) Asia/Pacific
Books dealing with any other areas are coordinated between the editors. While books reviewed are generally in English, we encourage non-English works to be considered and solicit reviews from specific experts in that language and field. We currently have French and Spanish language specialists.
The book review editor duties include:
contact wide range of publishers to be placed on their catalogue mailing lists;
examine publishers catalogues for new publications of potential interest to SHARP News' readers;
liaise with reviews co-editor to check for possible duplicate or unallocated reviews;
order review copies, note down all relevant publication details [currently approximately 12-15 books per year in fields relevant to SHARP readership], and arrange for review copies to be sent directly to reviewers;
be conversant with scholars in the various fields of print history;
identify and commission reviews from appropriate subject experts;
secure submission of reviews in a timely manner;
edit submitted reviews for coherence, content, style, length and bibliographical accuracy and re-submit them to the reviewers for correction;
forward edited text to the SHARP News editor;
after publication, mail out complimentary copies of SHARP News to the reviewers and the publishers of those books reviewed;
track carefully and accurately all stages of each review process from ordering the review copy through to mailing out complimentary copies of SHARP News following publication;
keep track of all related expenses (principally postal) and submit expenses claim (with receipts) every year to SHARP
