This lecture will begin by exploring the place of Classics and Greek myth in the mind of Gough Whitlam, as enunciated in a recent biography of him by Jenny Hocking (and launched by Kevin Rudd). The lecture will then turn to two Greek myths of love and separation — Demeter and Persephone (which, we learn, moved Gough to tears in his childhood), and Danae and her son Perseus. The end of the lecture will try to draw some conclusions from this about Greek myth and its place in the contemporary Australian context.
