The editors had a very favorable response to their first call for contributors for its new military history encyclopedia tentatively titled Conflict and the Fourth Estate: Media and Propaganda in U.S. Military History but there are still many unassigned entries. The work will cover the impact of media and propaganda during all the major wars in U.S. history, from colonial times to the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Attached you will find a list of topics for which we seek authors. Our goal is to assign these subjects out and have them written and submitted by late spring of 2009. Please keep in mind that the attached list is only a PARTIAL list representing those entries that have not yet been assigned or written.
These essays may be used in a variety of products beyond the printed book, including subscription databases, workbooks, chronologies, handbooks, etc. They are designed to appeal to a broad audience, including academics, students, and general readers.
ABC-CLIO, a publisher with more than 50 years of experience in historical reference publishing, has won many awards for its books and publications. Our Military History Series has earned the Editor’s Choice Award from Booklist for 2005, 2006, and 2007 and the Distinguished Achievement Award for 2006 (United States at War database), among many others.
We hope you will consider taking on as many topics as you can. The due dates are flexible, but we generally prefer to have essays completed within 60 days of their assignment. First set of entries must be submitted by no later than April 30, 2009.
Contracts will be prepared once contributors have agreed to entry assignments. Compensation is as follows:
• Contributors will have their names associated with their entries, wherever the entries appear.
• Contributors who complete more than 3,000 words will receive a $300 credit (Clio dollars) to be used to purchase any ABC-CLIO print or electronic product(s), including encyclopedias. For every 750 words thereafter, the credit increases by $50.
• A Clio dollar certificate will be mailed to you when the title is published. Clio dollar credits must be redeemed toward purchases within one year of the receipt of the certificate. Please note that CLIO dollars can now be reimbursed for Greenwood and Praeger books as well as ABC-CLIO products so this broader collection of titles, including more than 18,000 books on their backlist, might be very appealing to contributors.
If you would like to write entries that will appear in the first 6 chapters (North American Colonial Wars and the American Revolution, Wars of the Early Republic and the War of 1812, American Indian Wars, Mexican-American War, Civil War, and Spanish-American War), please e-mail Martin Manning at ManningMJ@state.gov with a list of the entries you are interested in writing. If you would like to write entries that will appear in Chapter 7-12 (WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Middle Eastern Wars - Afghanistan, Iraq) please e-mail Clarence Wyatt at wyattc@centre.edu with a list of the entries you are interested in. We will get back to you ASAP to make formal assignments.
