The Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) will be held in Philadelphia from December 2-6, 2009. I am forming a panel entitled "East Asia Goes Glocal: The Transformation of Foodways in China, South Korea and Japan". Examining case studies of China, South Korea and Japan, this panel explores processes of re-thinking food consumer habits in Asia. We look at the revival of local food products as a counterbalance to globalization and the safeguarding of national and local foodways in transnational food cultures. Topics discussed in this panel are the transformation of Chinese medicinal foodways in Germany and diet changes in Korea through the consumption of wheat products. A third paper is on the ‘food education’ (shokuiku) campaign initiated by the Japanese government while my own research focuses on the Slow Food Movement in Northern Japan. We are looking for one more participant working on the transformation of foodways in China, Japan or Korea, and/or the topic of food and national/regional identity. Papers should focus on China, Japan or Korea. Please send a 250 word (maximum) abstract and a brief bio to Stephanie Assmann (StAssmann@aol.com) by March 16, 2009.
