What constitutes authority in 21st century Africa? Conflicts – over social, economic, political, and historical experiences – privilege some sources of authority, marginalize others, and create still others. As leaders negotiate and deploy “traditional” and state authority, conflicts emerge that have consequences for the population at large. In building civil society, States strategically deploy some notions of traditional authority, while rejecting others. Alternatively, traditional stakeholders (including political and religious leaders, healers, and community activists) may mobilize state power for their own ends. Traditional and state authorities compete to resolve community conflicts, social dilemmas, or circumstances precipitated by new socioeconomic realities. In this panel, we use case studies to explore how forms of authority work to reinforce or subvert each other.
We invite anthropologists, historians, political scientists, economists, and other scholars to contribute abstracts related to this topic. Relevant papers might explore conflicts in a variety of areas, including:
- Control of resources (environmental, financial, technological, health, kinship)
- Legitimacy of knowledge production
- Religion and ritual
- Intergenerational relations
- Development
- Gender relations
- Creation and continuity of the postcolonial state
- Ethnicity
Please respond by March 8, 2009. The ASA deadline for completion of the panel proposal including all membership and conference registrations is March 15.
