Call for Papers
The Rural, Agricultural and Environmental History Network (RAEHN) of the Social Science History Association invites session and paper proposals for the Social Science History Association Annual Meeting in Long Beach, California, to be held on the historic Queen Mary ocean liner, Wednesday November 12 to Sunday November 15, 2009.
Session and paper proposals can be submitted to the network chairs or to the online submission site http://ssha.org/. Deadline for session and paper proposals is 1 March 2009. The network chairs are especially eager to see complete session proposals, but promising single paper submissions are always given every consideration.
Recent conferences in Miami, Chicago, Minneapolis and Portland were well attended. The Social Science History Association draws scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds working on historical problems. The opportunity for comparative engagement with your work are a strength of the meeting, and we particularly invite scholars interested in placing their work in transnational or transregional frameworks to submit proposals for sessions and papers.
Possible themes for sessions discussed at last year’s meeting include (this list is meant to provide suggestions. We are open for other themes and proposals):
--Landscape and agriculture
--Social conflict and the environment
--GIS and rural history
-- Power in rural history
--Labor activism in the countryside
--Gender and occupational segregation
--Rural life and rural health
--Rurality and modernity
--Social inequality and space
--Land tenure and commercialization
How to organize a panel session:
Sessions usually include three or four speakers who each present a paper on a related topic, a discussant and a chair. You can organize the participants and submit paper abstracts (250 words) as a group or individually, and arrange to have the other participants register online. Papers can also be submitted individually and the network chair can suggest common themes. The deadline for this is March 1, 2009. Register online using the conference submission system, and follow the online instructions at: http://conference.ssha.org/people/login.
For further information see the association’s web site: http://ssha.org/
