Second Call for Chapters: Africa Focus 2008
Human Sciences Research Council Publication Africa Focus 2008
Theme: Governance in Africa
The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), South Africa’s premier social research institution, invites the scholarly community and policy intellectuals to send in extended abstracts of chapters for consideration for inclusion in the first issue of the HSRC’s new annual publication Africa Focus. Closing date is 1 April 2009.
The HSRC has identified the need for a platform for critical and innovative debates around themes that will contribute to the dissemination of the views of African scholars among research, policy and academic institutions, civil society organizations and governments, both in Africa and abroad. The series’ unique trait and contribution will be its ability to illuminate African voices on policy and to chart emerging and new paths and contexts in the production of research knowledge relevant to Africa’s developmental aspirations. The Africa Focus 2008 issue will be structured around the broad theme of governance and will explore various aspects of the following sub-themes:
1. The African state in the 21st century, dealing with issues such as: new typologies of the African state, accountability, citizenship and identity, traditional and modern institutions of governance, and regional integration
2. Knowledge and transformation, dealing with issues such as: knowledge production and consumption, ownership and location of knowledge, transformation of institutions of higher education, and the role of the information super highway
3. Environment and natural resources, including eco-conflicts, global warming, natural resource management, food production and consumption, tourism and poverty
4. Economy and livelihoods, including poverty, food security and access to land, labour processes, markets and movements, and human security
5. Public health and well-being, such as discourses of disease, governance and health sector, global institutions in health care, traditional healers, culture and health, and mental health
6. Africa and the world, including the new scramble for Africa, challenging the global hegemony, international funding and local development, and international social movements
Established and emerging scholars are invited to submit extended abstracts of proposed contributions under the six sub-themes. Proposals for chapters are not limited to the above-mentioned aspects, but should a) show innovative directions in the debates and b) use recent or new empirical data as the basis for arguments. The abstract should clearly show the author’s focus and research methodology.
Selection of chapters will be done by an independent Editorial Committee which is guided by an Advisory Board consisting of leading African scholars. Approved chapters will be peer reviewed. Contributors will receive an honorarium.
Interested scholars are invited to send an extended abstract of 1500 words not later than 1 April 2009. Authors of selected abstracts will be required to prepare a final chapter not exceeding 8,000 words, which should be received not later than 30 June 2009. Draft chapters should be sent to:
