Greenwich Maritime Institute is hosting a one-day conference to mark the completion of the Leverhulme-funded ‘Sustaining the Empire’ project, which has examined the naval Victualling Board and its relationship with its contractors. Dr Martin Wilcox and James Davey of Greenwich Maritime Institute will present some of the key conclusions of the project. Subsequent speakers will discuss other aspects of the complex relationship between government and private sector, including the Transport Board and British shipping, royal dockyards overseas, army contractors of the mid-eighteenth century and the activities of British and German merchants. The day will conclude with a short session to summarise and discuss some of the key themes.
