"The Environment of Southern Industrialization."

The Southern Industrialization Project (SIP) is seeking scholarly papers for presentation at its workshop at the 75th Annual Meeting of the Southern Historical Association in Louisville, Kentucky, November 5 - 8, 2009. The theme of this year's workshop is "The Environment of Southern Industrialization."Proposals addressing issues related to the changing nature of the southern environment as a function of industrialization from the antebellum period to the twentieth century are welcome. Suggested topics might include human response to the evolving southern environment, resource allocation and exploration, slavery and the environment, waste and garbage, the Nashville Agrarians, conservation, New South environmentalism, regional environmental politics, disease and industrial hygiene, scientific agriculture, pesticides, flood control, and changing ecology of the Sunbelt.
Anyone working on these or related topics is encouraged to submit a 500 word abstract and one page cv by March 9, 2009, to Gerard J. Fitzgerald, Chair of the Program Committee at gjf239@nyu.edu
