Call for Papers: 2009 MLA Annual Convention
December 27-30, 2009
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Committee on the Status of Graduate Students in the Profession
Roundtable on Economics and Graduate Students
The Committee on the Status of Graduate Students in the Profession considers a range of curricular, intellectual, and professional issues that affect graduate students in language and literature and other projects that will assist graduate students while they pursue their education. With this in mind and with the recent onset of international economic difficulties, the economic struggles of graduate students form a large part of the dialog in the field. There are many concerns, from debt, tuition, energy, health care, and the economic position of our universities, to others such as the cost of travel to conferences and of service to the MLA. The Committee on the Status of Graduates in the Profession is organizing a roundtable that will serve as a platform to interchange ideas and concerns about graduate students and their economic situations.
We invite participants interested in discussing or presenting work on the following topics:
-Graduate school funding
-Fellowships/Scholarships
-Funds for Conferences
-Health care options for graduate students
-Finding funding for research
-Financial planning for graduate school
These are suggested topics and others are welcomed. Participants must be members of the MLA by early April; for membership information please visit mla.org. Presenters shall have 8-10 minutes to offer commentary.
Please submit your proposals to Luziris Pineda Turi lpineda@uh.edu by March 15.
