HUMANITARIANISM IN QUESTION:
BEYOND INTERVENTION AND NON-INTERVENTION
Humanitarianism is the subject of a growing critique questioning the authenticity, viability and effectiveness of the global aid enterprise. These criticisms, and their rejoinders, have generated a new set of debates about humanitarianism.
But, to what extent are these debates themselves problematic? How do current debates about humanitarianism, or the ‘responsibility to protect’, artificially establish ‘intervention’ as the sole policy option? Do the languages of ‘security’ and ‘empire’ similarly constrain and obfuscate the question(s) in and of humanitarianism?
On May 20, 2009 Carleton University in Ottawa is hosting a one-day workshop on Humanitarianism in Question to foster a critical conversation about the limits, problems, gaps, and future directions in current thinking on humanitarianism.
We are seeking paper proposals or expressions of interest in participating in this one day event. Papers should engage with the critical questioning of humanitarianism. It is hoped this workshop will encourage a productive exchange across disciplines and between scholars, practitioners and policy workers on the questions and research agendas that might be found in the spaces between and outside current debates on humanitarianism.
Funding for travel support is available.
Paper proposals of not more than 150 words and request for more information should be e-mailed by February 23, 2009 to:
