November 24, 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species, and The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto are mounting a Gala Celebratory Conference, November 21-24, 2009. The conference will culminate in a gala dinner on November 24 at which participants will toast the tremendous achievement of Charles Robert Darwin. The conference will be held at the historic and elegant Victoria College, at the University of Toronto.
Keynote speakers include Spencer Barrett, Sean Carroll, Evelyn Fox Keller, James Moore, Alison Pearn, and Michael Ruse. Five multi-disciplinary symposia have been organised,
which will consist a biologist, a historian of biology and a philosopher of biology. Topics include:
Gender, Evolution, and Sexual Selection
Evolution and Development
Species
Taxonomy
Ecology
We are also accepting papers for our contributed papers session. Those wishing to contribute a paper can send a 300-500 word abstract relating to the theme of the conference to conference.ihpst@utoronto.ca by APRIL 15, 2009.Notifications will be sent by May 15, 2009.
