Finding Animals: Toward a Comparative History and Theory of Animals

April 30 - May 1, 2009, Penn State University's Visualizing Animals group announces a two day conference “Finding Animals: Toward a Comparative History and Theory of Animals” with leading contributors to the field of Animal Studies, and an artist’s talk by Mark Dion. Panel topics include: Scientific Models in Comparative Perspective; Art, Science, and Commerce; The Domestic and the Wild; Animal Life and National Bodies; New Models of Animal Consciousness and Behavior; Capture and Colonization: The Geography of Control; Ethical and Ecological Concerns of Engaging with Animal Subjects. An accompanying exhibition “Finding Animals in Paradox and Parable” at the University's Zoller Art Gallery will include works by many of the local artists whose images are included on our website. The conference is free and open to the public, Foster Auditorium, Pattee Library is handicap accessible.
