Summer Institute for Teachers entitled George Washington and His Legacy: Myths, Symbols, and Reality

K-12 educators are encouraged to apply for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Institute for Teachers entitled George Washington and His Legacy: Myths, Symbols, and Reality which will take place from July 19th to August 7th at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. The three week program will focus on Washington’s personal life, public career as well as his overall legacy. Classes will meet daily on campus, with field trips to Washington’s military headquarters in nearby Cambridge and to the John Adams National Historic Park. The Institute will emphasize scholarship but with practical application. Teachers will be introduced to primary sources, professional articles, and web sites they can utilize in their classrooms. Participants will conclude their studies with a curriculum unit reflecting Washington scholarship relevant to classroom use. A stipend of $2,600 dollars will be paid to cover travel, housing, and meals while in residence in Boston. Deadline for applications is March 2nd, 2009.
