In Summer 2009, the Yale Center for British Art will offer a seminar running from June 22 to 27 for Ph.D. students working in the area of visual culture and the British Empire, with a particular focus on India. Utilizing the extraordinarily rich holdings of art, material culture, printed books and manuscripts at the Center and in collections elsewhere at Yale, as well as in the greater metropolitan area of New York, the seminar, which is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will provide a critical opportunity for graduate students working across a range of disciplines to engage in depth with this important and complex topic. Instructors for this seminar will be Gillian Forrester, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the YCBA, and Tim Barringer, Paul Mellon Professor of the History of Art at Yale University.
The course is open to students within the U.S. and from abroad, working in any discipline, who can clearly articulate ways in which the course theme relates directly to their Ph.D. research. Participants will be provided with economy airfare, ground transportation, meals, and accommodation at Yale. Students will be expected to undertake reading assignments in advance of the seminar, and arrive prepared for intensive and informed discussion.
Applications should include a CV, transcripts, statement of how the student’s research or dissertation focus fits the theme of the course, and their aspirations and goals for this seminar within their work.
