Sailing Proud: An Introduction
'Sailing Proud' is an initiative looking at the history of gay seafarers and the homosexual experience at sea. It has developed out of the book "Hello Sailor!" by Dr Jo Stanley and Dr Paul Baker, and the subsequent touring exhibition produced by National Museums Liverpool. 'Sailing Proud' aims to promote further research of this subject.
This seminar will focus on the book and its development into the exhibition, accompanied by an external perspective of Hello Sailor! and the work done by museums to address such underrepresented histories. In addition it will provide an overview of the work that has followed on, for example the establishment of the 'Sailing Proud' archive at Merseyside Maritime Museum.
The seminar is open to academics, researchers and museum professionals.
Lunch will be served in the Dockside Gallery on the 4th floor at 12.30pm. Tea and coffee will be available half way through the session.
