Call for Papers: Conversion to Christianity in Modern Asia
Proposals are invited for an edited volume on conversion to Christianity in modern Asia. While there have been helpful volumes on theories of conversion, conversion to Christianity, and Asian Christianity, there has been relatively little comparative and theoretical work on Christian conversion in Asia.
We wish to focus the volume in two ways: (1) we prefer historically nuanced scholarship that draws creatively on original sources (written or oral) in non-Western languages, and only secondarily on missionary archival work in European languages; and (2) we hope to include studies that draw on, and constructively engage, a range of historiographic and social science theory and methodology. Conversion may be construed as either individual or collective. The work is seen as broadly modern in purview (perhaps beginning with Jesuit missions). Geographically, ‘Asia’ is broadly conceived, inclusive of South, Central, Southeast, and East Asia.
Our goal is 12-15 essays of no more than 10,000 words each, including our analytical introduction. Inquiries, proposals, and referrals should be sent to Richard Fox Young (richard.young@ptsem.edu) and Jonathan Seitz (jaseitz@gmail.com) by March 1, 2009. The editors hope to finalize the roster of contributors by the end of May, with a project deadline one year later.
