The Bodies of Black Folk
If the potential election of Democratic nominee Senator Barak Obama has taught us anything, it is that race matters. And more to the point—black bodies matter. No one has ever questioned the “whiteness” of Senator McCain or Governor Sarah Palin—no one has interrogated their sense of national belonging. But Senator Obama’s mixed body—his paternal heritage firmly rooted in the nation of Africa—means that America will have to consider its other sons as possible candidates for the highest office in this country. This, coupled with the fear that The White House will no longer be “the” White House poses many questions about nationhood, paternity, whiteness and blackness, and ways of knowing encoded in our national annals (and I haven’t even considered Mrs. Michelle Obama or their children!)
Although much more complex than the brief meditation above, this call for papers centers on how black bodies—as text and material currency in America’s never-ending dialogue on race, class, gender, and sexuality—frames and is framed by the politics of national belonging. We cast the net wide as possible in this call, considering the multifarious and imaginative ways the bodies of black folk are staged—(re)presented—in our national and global literatures, films, popular culture, media, law, medicine, environmental studies, among other disciplines. If you are interested in contributing to this special issue, please forward an abstract by March 1, 2009. Entire papers will be due by June 15, 2009. You can send your abstract to ceh@udel.edu or to:
