ASA 2009 Panelists for “Feeling Like You Belong?: Sense Perception and Group Identity"
|
|
This panel examines the ways in which the conscious and systematic development of perceptive faculties has shaped and policed the boundaries of group identity. In what ways has the interiority necessarily associated with sense education been cultivated, disciplined, and represented? How have educators, reformers, theorists, doctors, athletes, and artists employed sense training to serve the creation of specific body cultures and visions of inclusion and exclusion? What racial and social assumptions under-gird these ideals and the creation of these groups? How have individuals embraced, resisted, and transformed the imposition of sensory education? All time periods and methodologies are welcome. If you are interested in taking part in this panel, please send a concise abstract of your paper (no more than 500 words) and a one-page vita to Sarah Carter (scarter@fas.harvard.edu) and Robin Veder (rmv10@psu.edu) no later than January 5, 2009.
