First International Interdisciplinary Conference on Macau Studies: Intercultural Exchanges between East and West
25-27 May 2009
University of Macau
Organized by the History Department, University of Macau
In 2005 the historic centre of Macau was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage, reflecting the historical and cultural importance of the city. Since the sixteenth century Macau has been a privileged and unique platform for not only commercial but also cultural exchange between East and West. Ten years after the handover of the Macau administration to the People’s Republic of China, the recently created Department History of the University of Macau would like to gather researchers and scholars from all over the world to have in-depth and focused discussions of the past, present and future role of Macau as a “cultural Janus”, constantly looking over East and West, in order to enhance our understanding of the pattern and development of intercultural actions through which to find the paradigms that could promote intercultural interaction, understanding and harmony.
We are inviting 20 min. presentations and panels from scholars and/or professionals in the field, and suggest the following issues:
Sino-Western cultural exchange/Luso-Chinese Studies/Multiculturalism/Macanese Identity
Travel Writing/ Representations of Macau in Asian and Western Literature/Chinese, Portuguese & English Literature in/of Macau/Language Studies
Religion Studies
Gender Studies
Macau History/Macau society
Proposals written in English must be sent by 15 January 2009 to Dr. Rogerio Miguel Puga . Abstracts should be 250-300 words and accompanied by a bio sketch of 100-150 words. A decision on proposals received will be made by 31 January. Initial enquiries pre-proposal are welcomed.
