Dear Colleagues [Apologies for cross-posting]:
[Short version: abstract submissions now open for an EGU April 2009
session in Vienna, Austria on heavy-metal contamination of water, air,
soil and foodcrops. Submit your abstracts at
http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2009/.]
[Longer version:]
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) will hold its 5th General Assembly
from 19-24 April 2009 in Vienna, Austria. We invite you to participate in
the session NH9.1/BG2.10/SSS44 Heavy-metal contamination of water, air,
soil, and foodcrops. Last year (April 2008 EGU) this session was
particularly successful with 47 abstracts from 27 countries.
Session: NH9.1/BG2.10/SSS44 Heavy-metal contamination of water, air,
soil, and foodcrops (co-organized by the Natural Hazards, Biogeosciences
& Soil Systems Sciences divisions).
Conveners: Jennifer A Holden, Bruce D Malamud, Loretta Li, Konstantinos
Kostarelos
Session description: In many countries, particularly developing ones,
industrial outputs can result in heavy-metal contamination of the air,
water, soils, and/or plants. This session focuses on heavy-metal
contamination as a hazard, and solicits contributions that are applied
and theoretical, in areas ranging from (a) field trials and modelling of
heavy-metal contamination as it progresses from the source to the air,
water, soils, and/or plants, (b) monitoring techniques, including
low-cost, for heavy-metals in the environment, (c) mitigation of
heavy-metal contamination in areas already effected, again including
low-costs. We welcome contributions ranging from experimental,
laboratory, to modelling, with emphasis (but not limited to) low-cost
ideas and research that might be applied to developing countries. This
session will consist of (a) an all poster session with participants
brought around as a group by the chair to discuss each poster, and (b)
if enough interest, an associated discussion session of one to two hours
in a splinter room.
ABSTRACT DEADLINE: 13 January 2009 (7 December 2008 for financial
applications)
Web site for submission: http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2009/index.html
Please note that the deadline for financial applications is 7 December
2008, and for pre-registration is 31 March 2009. We look forward to
seeing you in Vienna. Please forward this message also to your colleagues.
With best regards,
