The editors of White House Studies would like to announce a call for papers addressing Presidents and War. All aspects of executive action concerning the subject will be considered. Some topics that may be explored are as follows; the use of the cabinet and executive agencies during war; secrecy and power, executive/congressional relations; domestic political considerations, presidential rhetoric, communication strategies; measurements of success; presidential relationships with the military bureaucracy; civil rights and civil liberties, war and its effect upon the Constitution; unsettled legal and constitutional issues; war powers; presidential elections and war; the effect of polling on war and presidential policy; presidential historical comparisons. This list is only suggestive. The editors are open to new topics and considerations.
The editors would like to encourage a broad look at the subject not merely confined to modern times. As such we would like to initiate the issue with a consideration of James Madison and the War of 1812. We would also like to encourage scholarship concerning the role of First Ladies and War. Scholars interested in such a project should send a one page proposal of their research along with a current vita. The decision to accept proposals will be determined by the content of the proposal, contribution of the proposal to presidential scholarship and determination to finish the project. Please send proposals by December 15, 2008 to:
