"Somebody Had to Do It": The First Children of ˆBrownˆ
|
Dear Colleagues:
You are invited to participate in an exciting activity which we feel will have relevance to you and your students (or members), hosted on November 14, 2008 by the Department of History and Sociology of Claflin University. Long held as primarily a historical or political phenomenon, the “Somebody” Project is designed to expand the discourse about Brown’s impact on the children who stepped forward to make school de-segregation a reality and looks to encourage collaboration between many who feel the legacy of ˆBrown v Board of Educationˆ (1954) has yet to be fully analyzed and critiqued.
Between 2:00 and 4:30pm in Tingley Hall Auditorium on the 14th of November, project originators will present their visions for crossing academic discipline lines to create a database of all those who have yet to be recognized for their efforts to transform mid-twentieth century racial politics. Their stories must be collected and made available for future research efforts. The analysis of their experiences must be made available to educators, policy makers and others who may learn from the earlier sacrifices. An appreciation for the personal trauma endured must be voiced before these school desegregation pioneers are too old or no longer present to be affected.
Please join us on the 14th as the “Somebody Had To Do It” Project is introduced, first in South Carolina and ultimately across the nation.
Please email acceptances to Dr. Millicent E. Brown milbrown@claflin.edu or call 803-535-5688.
