La question de l’art public et la création de jardins de sculptures constituent de nos jours d’importants phénomènes culturels partout dans le monde. Aux États-Unis, les villes de Se attle, avec son Olympic Sculpture Park, et de Chicago, avec son Millenium Park, se distinguent grâce à leurs magnifiques ensembles de sculptures, tout comme New York avec ses chutes d’eau éphémères, The New York City Waterfalls.
Montréal s’est trouvée à l’avant-garde de ce mouvement avec l’Expo 67, qui accueillit des œuvres d’art public remarquables : le dôme géodésique de Buckminster Fuller, le Paradis fantastique de Niki de Saint-Phalle et Jean Tinguely sur le toit du pavillon de la France, ou encore le merveilleux stabile Man d’Alexander Calder, offert à la Ville par son propriétaire, Vale Inco. Aujourd’hui, Montréal demeure un centre réputé pour l’art public, en raison de ses sites extraordinaires et de son importance comme métropole culturelle.
Ce colloque inter national sur l’art public engage le débat, et invite à la discussion toutes les personnes intéressées par l’art public à Montréal.
Des présentations par des spécialistes de renommée internationale, suivies d’une table ronde, passeront en revue des exemples remarquables de réalisations d’art public originales, d’horizons très divers et faisant usage d’idées et de solutions créatives.

Public art and sculpture gardens have become important cultural phenomenons around the globe. American cities like Seattle, Chicago and New York have become identified with their outstanding public sculpture installations: Millennium Park, Olympic Sculpture Park and The New York City Waterfalls.
Montreal was at the forefront of this movement with Expo 67, which featured such memorable public art as Buckminste r Fuller’s sculptural geodesic dome, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely’s Paradis fantastique on the roof of the French Pavilion and the outstanding stabile Man by Alexander Calder, which was donated to the city by its owner Vale Inco. With its extraordinary sites and its renown as a cultural metropolis, Montreal remains a centre for public art today.
This International Public Art Symposium opens the debate and discussion for everyone concerned about public art in Montreal.
Presentations by internationally recognized professionals in Public Art, followed by a round-table discussion, will explore exceptional examples of original public art projects in diverse locations that make use of creative solutions and ideas.
