Binge learning is more prevalent than you might think. Students cram all the knowledge from our lectures and seminars, from their books and notes into their heads before an exam, only to spew it out again onto the exam paper (in sometimes pretty unrecognizable form). We as teachers bemoan this fact and wishfully think back to the mythical students we ourselves must have been, who learned independently, driven by intrinsic motivation, able to relate to each other different ideas, sources, rules, and modus operandi. But how much does our own teaching facilitate constructive learning?
This panel invites practical contributions that pursue a balanced diet of learning opportunities, taking into account differences in learner types and learning styles. How does input successfully become intake? What teaching and learning strategies can be employed not only for passing exams but for the often-quoted goal of lifelong learning? Contributers should present short activities in workshop-style that reflect these issues, either for the classroom or for AI training. Please send abstracts of 250 words to Susanne Even, evens@indiana.edu by December 5, 2008.
