PHMC Scholars in Residence Program 2009 – 2010 The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) invites applications for its 2009-2010 Scholars in Residence Program, including applications for collaborative residencies.
Regular Residencies are open to all who are conducting research on Pennsylvania history, including academic scholars, professionals, independent scholars, graduate students, educators, writers, filmmakers, and other researchers. Residencies may be scheduled at any PHMC facility, including the Pennsylvania State Archives, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, and twenty-five historic sites and museums around the state, for up to eight weeks at any time during the period May 1, 2009 – April 30, 2010; stipends are awarded at the rate of $375 per week.
Collaborative residencies are also open to scholars and represent an alternative track within the Scholars in Residence Program, specifically funding research that relates to the interpretive mission and advances the programmatic goals of a specific PHMC program or facility. A collaborative residency application must be filed jointly by the interested scholar and host program/facility. An example of a Collaborative Residency would be a PHMC Museum Curator working directly with a Scholar during his/her residency to jointly compile an inventory or survey of a particular type of artifact or collection.
Applicants are encouraged to view research topics broadly, including beyond the boundaries of Pennsylvania, and to identify PHMC collections relevant to those topics, to assess availability and accessibility of collections, and to discuss their research agenda with appropriate staff prior to submitting a proposal. Because the PHMC is interested in making history meaningful and accessible to diverse audiences, research likely to result in widespread dissemination through non-specialized films, exhibitions or other means is particularly welcome.
