The African-American History Working Group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will present an interdisciplinary conference on February 27-28, 2009. The conference will offer graduate students and faculty the opportunity to present their current research in an encouraging environment. Conference presentations will be limited to 20 minutes. Participants will receive feedback from the session commentator as well as the audience. This is a good opportunity for first-time presenters and for more seasoned scholars presenting works in progress.

The Conference Committee invites proposals for single papers and entire session panels that cover the history and culture of African Americans across a range of time periods and areas. Suggested topics on the black historical experience include: transnational and Diaspora studies, Afro-Caribbean studies, Afro-Latino studies, slavery, migration, emancipation studies, work/labor, consumerism, pop culture, urban, education, black power, civil rights, black freedom struggle, politics, sexuality, religion, music, and literature. Papers on other related topics will also be considered.

Eligibility: Graduate students and faculty.

Deadline: The deadline for proposals is December 1, 2008. Respond via email with your name, institution, title, email address, proposed paper title, curriculum vitae and a one-page abstract. Please put "Conference Proposal" in your subject line.

The conference paper itself should have a historical focus and be a maximum of fifteen pages in length, not including endnotes and bibliography. Presentations will be strictly limited to fifteen to twenty minutes, inclusive of any time needed for audio-visual setup.
