The Villanova Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (Philadelphia) is organizing a major international conference April 2-4, 2009 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In addition to scholarly sessions, the conference will also feature a number of cultural events. Keynote address by Dr. Juan Cole, president of the Global Americana Institute.
Proposals are invited for papers including but not limited to the following topics:
(Re)focusing of Arab and Islamic Studies
Political conflicts / human rights
Peace-building
Education in the Arab and Islamic World
Environmental issues / globalization
Oil / resources / econony
Post/coloniality / post/modernity
Questions of identity / cultural pluralism
Women / gender and Islam
Authorship / literature / literary connections
Representation / media /
Arab arts and cinema
Legal systems: religious and secular
Religious diversity in the Arab World
Please send a 250 word abstract and a short cv to aisconference@villanova.edu by October 30, 2008.
