Papers are invited for a conference addressing the short and long term historical impact of disasters in the Irish and wider contexts. While the themes of famine and scarcity are not excluded, emphasis will be placed on disasters such as fires/conflagrations; shipwrecks and other large-scale transport accidents; epidemics/pandemics; and natural calamities including floods, earthquakes and storms. The conference seeks to address immediate and long term social and economic impact; contemporary official and legal responses; and the shaping of historical memory.
Keynote address by Professor John W Foster.
Please submit 20-minute paper proposal (200 words) by 1 October 2008.
