The American Studies Association K-16 Collaboration Committee would like to invite all interested parties to attend the Focus on Teaching day at the annual American Studies Association meeting in Albuquerque, NM, October 16-19, 2008. This day-long program will take place on Saturday, October 18. It will include panels on building high school American Studies programs (8:00-9:45 AM, in the Laguna Room); interdisciplinary approaches to teaching immigration (10:00-11:45 AM, in the San Miguel Room); and teaching memoirs and using oral history in the K-16 classroom (2:00-3:45 PM, in the San Miguel Room). All panels include a mix of K-12 and college educators who will be discussing the theory and practice of American Studies pedagogy while sharing concrete instructional strategies.
In addition, we will be hosting a K-16 Collaboration Luncheon on Saturday from 12:00-2:00 (in the Laguna Room). We are honored to have Lois Rudnick, professor of American Studies and English at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and editor of American Identities, offer the keynote address at this year's lunch. Her talk is entitled, "Change We Can Believe In: American Studies and the (Re)formation of Education." Please note that the K-16 Luncheon requires a ticket. Please consider signing up for the luncheon when you register for the conference (registration can be amended up until October 5--http://prostores2.carrierzone.com/servlet/theasanet/StoreFront). Tickets can be purchased on site, but only until 5:00 pm October 17, 2008. Cost of tickets is $15 for faculty, $8 for students and K-12 educators, and $5 for international scholars.
