The panel will explore the use of figures of the "East" or "Orient" in American writing before 1800. From Thomas Harriot's remarks on Persian silk to Anne Bradstreet's "Four Monarchies" to Cotton Mather's frequent references to the Orient in his biblical commentaries to J. Hector St. John de Crévecoeur’s invocation of “the emperor of China ploughing,” early American writers from a variety of periods and ideological perspectives turned to figures of the East at important points in their writing. Papers should explore images, descriptions, and/or references relating to the "East" and/or "Orient"--both terms defined as broadly as one would like—in American writing before 1800. Literary, anthropological, historical, and other disciplinary approaches are welcome.
