Appraisal is the archivist's first and primary responsibility, the most important thing we do, and the hardest. We decide what will be saved and whose history will be remembered. But the sheer volume of available documentary materials and the rapid obsolescence of various media preclude the preservation of everything. Then again, what we do not save may be lost forever. This is a heavy responsibility indeed, so we need to make sure that our selection is informed by the highest principles and best practices available. In this workshop, participants will learn about the development of appraisal theory, and the many strategies, tools, and techniques available to guide and document their appraisal decisions. Through hands-on exercises, participants will have a chance to practice using some of these techniques and begin to develop their own appraisal strategies.
Location: Crowne Plaza Washington DC–Silver Spring
8777 Georgia Avenue Silver Spring, MD
For questions regarding the workshop only please contact L. Dale Patterson, United Methodist Church Archives - GCAH, at dpatterson@gcah.org.
