POPULAR MUSIC AND SOCIETY
CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on Krautrock
Papers are invited for a special issue of Popular Music and Society on Krautrock.
The extraordinary and ongoing influence of Krautrock (the progressive German music of the late 1960s and 1970s) on areas of popular music from punk to hip hop to electronica is widely acknowledged. However, after almost forty years there still exists a distinct dearth of scholarship on this music and its makers. Papers focusing on Krautrock’s reflection of its temporal and political location and papers on Krautrock’s reception are particularly encouraged.
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Defining/Redefining Krautrock
Krautrock as (in)coherent movement
Discerning different strands of Krautrock
Krautrock as distinct from progressive music in other countries
Popular reception of Krautrock in Germany and abroad
“Krautrock” as an externally based concept
Krautrockers’ perceptions of Krautrock
German and international influences on/by Krautrock
The Hippie movement and Krautrock
The legacy of Krautrock
The Krautrockers and their music today
Krautrock and the New German Wave in film
Germanness in Krautrock
Reconstruction of German identity circa 25 years after World War II
Language and sound
Krautrock and technology
Krautrock East: Experimental music in 1960s/1970s DDR
Tentative Production Timeline:
Oct. 1, 2008 – Deadline for Submission of Articles
