Colloquium Tuesday & Wednesday 05-06/05/2009, University of Leicester
Proposals are sought for an interdisciplinary colloquium entitled:
Britain and the Holocaust – Remembering and Representing War & Genocide: The Impact of WWII & the Holocaust on Today’s Britain
Key Note Lecture:
‘From Stockholm to Stockton: The Holocaust as Heritage’
Prof. Dan Stone (Royal Holloway, University of London)
The colloquium is to be held at the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies, University of Leicester (UK).
It aims to engage in recent research from all disciplines and fields on Britain’s reactions to the Second World War and the Holocaust during and after the ‘Third Reich’, focusing mainly on questions of memory, remembering, and representation and its implications for today’s Britain. Furthermore, it seeks to explore the various meanings of the Holocaust for different groups of people in a multicultural society.
How have individuals, communities, and Britain as a whole reacted, memorised and come to terms with the Second World War and the Holocaust, and what impact does it still have on every day live?
The Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies has recently launched two oral history projects on the memory and impact of the Holocaust on Jews and non-Jews in Britain and seeks to build up a network regarding the questions addressed in the colloquium.
Panels normally will consist of two papers of 20 minutes each and 20 minutes discussion.
Suggestion for panels: (4 suggested panels, 2 papers each, 8 papers in total):
1. British Reactions to the Holocaust pre and post 1945
2. Memory of the Holocaust and the Impact on Jewish Life in Britain
3. Memory of WWII and the Holocaust and the Impact on non-Jewish Life in Britain
4. Representation of WWII and the Holocaust in Britain in e.g. Memorials, Art & Exhibitions, in Film, Television or Computer Games
Proposals for papers should not exceed 500 words, proposals for panels are also welcome, and should be sent together with a title and a short bio-bibliographical note to Dr Olaf Jensen (oj6@le.ac.uk; subject: Britain and the Holocaust), before 31 July 2008.
Applicants will be informed regarding inclusion on the conference program by mid September 2008.
Final papers (6000-7000 words, including footnotes) are required by 31 February 2009.
Successful applicants will be invited to Leicester and the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies will cover the costs for accommodation; travel costs can be covered as well if no other institution is able to cover them.
The conference proceedings are potentially to be included into the book series ‘The Holocaust and its Contexts’ with Palgrave Macmillan, edited by Olaf Jensen & Chris Szejnmann.
