Evangelists of Empire?: Missionaries in Colonial History is an online, edited collection of chapters examining the historical relationship between missionaries and colonialism. Making use of an impressive variety of source material and a broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches, this ground-breaking collection offers new ways of assessing not only the uneven paths of mission endeavours, but also the ways in which indigenous peoples responded to, and took ownership of, aspects of Christian and Western spirituality and culture. The collection contains work by established and emerging Australian scholars, including Peggy Brock, Patricia Grimshaw, Julie Evans and Peter Sherlock. It is number 18 in the History Conference and Seminar Series published at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
The collection is freely available through open-access online publishing; print copies may also be purchased through:
